Divide or ÷

About Divide or ÷

Division is the inverse of multiplication, one of the four basic arithmetic operations (along with addition, subtraction, and multiplication). Division is essentially the process of splitting a number into equal parts or determining how many times one number fits into another.
Symbol: Common ways to represent division: ÷ , / , Fraction bar .

Key Terms in Division

Dividend: The number being divided (e.g., 10 in 10 ÷ 2 ).
Divisor: The number dividing the dividend (e.g., 2 in 10 ÷ 2 ).
Quotient: The result (e.g., 5 in 10 ÷ 2 ).
Remainder: The amount left over if the dividend isn’t perfectly divisible (e.g., 10 ÷ 3 = 3 with a remainder of 1).

Properties of Divide

Non-Commutative: Order matters! a ÷ b ≠ b ÷ a ( unless a = b ).
Non-Associative: ( a ÷ b ) ÷ c ≠ a ÷ ( b ÷ c ).
Distributive Property: a × ( b + c ) = ( a × b ) + ( a × c )
Division by 1: Any number divided by 1 is itself.
Division by 0: Undefined (cannot split a number into zero parts).

Types of Division

Exact (No Remainder): 15 ÷ 5 = 3 (no remainder).
With Remainder: 16 ÷ 5 = 3 with a remainder of 1 .
Decimal Division: 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 (converts to a decimal).
Fractional Division: Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.
